FRETS.NET

Good Morning.

I subscribe to Vintage Guitar and Fret Journal, both of which do a great job of going farther into the subject without too much popular hype one finds in many of the others. And they are printed well.  Most of them have free websites, so sometimes it is just easier and cheaper to go there.

I saw one yesterday called Guitar Afficianado, which had ads for expensive cars, cigars, and watches, essentially for those guys who want to bling out like a rock star. Not much content though.

What publications do you fellas read every month that inspire your inner guitarist/ luthier?

Saw my first copy of 'Guitar Aficionado' about 2 months ago....looked-thought it for 5mins and tossed it. Seems like it's just another coffee-table magazine for people with too much money and the need to impress. Years ago, a friend of mine went to see an Indiana Jones movie and his description fits this magazine to a tee: "a mile wide and and inch deep".

I subscribe to VG Mag, Bass Player, Downbeat, Bluegrass Unlimited and (through G.A.L.) American Lutherie. When the subscriptions end, I'll probably let Bass Player and Downbeat go away.... they're fine for what they are, but just don't float my boat anymore. The others are perennial keepers for my tastes.
None, I dumped all my mag subscriptions years ago when I realized I was wasting valuable time reading them when I could be doing/learning useful stuff. Furthermore, I live in the hope that one day I will have an original thought as a consequence.

To inspire/motivate myself I simply turn up the sound system in the truck on the way into the workshop and reflect on what I am actually here for. Seriously. Works for me.

Once in a while I look at all of the ones on the newsagent shelf and never buy any. Just pages full of ads and junk discussion. That Guitar Afficianado is probably the worst! But I would not be without my subscription to Fretboard Journal. There you get really knowledgeable people writing on great topics.

I read all of them regardless of quality. They all still have something worthwhile. However, American Lutherie, Fretboard Journal, and Vintage Guitar are my favorites. Fine Woodworking has some great articles too!
